Liverpool FC, football, sport / The Under 20s transfer thread.
« on: September 21, 2017, 08:43:06 AM »
As half the players we're linked with seem to be under 20, building for the future that never seems to turn into the present.

So today we're linked with two sub 20 players:

Liverpool transfer news: Reds eye RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano

http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/856838/Liverpool-transfer-news-Dayot-Upamecano-RB-Leipzig

Age: 18  Position: Centre half

Liverpool news: Reds face battle with Tottenham for Werder Bremen wonderkid David Philipp

Age: 17  Position: Attacking midfielder

Liverpool FC's £50m training complex gets green light

https://www.constructionnews.co.uk/projects/liverpool-fcs-50m-training-complex-gets-green-light/10023251.article

Good news. It's a shame to leave Melwood because it's so synonymous with the likes of Shankly and Paisley and the great Liverpool teams, but we need everything 'under one roof' so Klopp has much closer contact with all the junior teams and the progress of the players, and the players get a chance to train on the same complex as the first team, which will hopefully prove to be a greater inspiration to them and their progress.

I doubt it will happen, but it would be great if Melwood were turned into some sort of sports facilities for local schools and the community, and given back to the local community.

Liverpool's contract talks with Emre Can show the ongoing power struggle between players and clubs - there is more on the line for Jurgen Klopp than just the midfielder's Anfield future

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-4857426/Liverpool-s-Emre-talks-player-v-club-power-battle.html

"With only 10 months left on his deal the sticking point is not over money, but a release clause. "

Offer him a lower salary with a £50M clause in, or a higher salary with a £75M clause.

The player gets to choose - easier exit and lower income, or harder exit but higher income.

The player has some sort of window to leave, whilst the club protects it's investment made in the player.

Apparently he's only on something like £35K a week (not sure how true that is, only what I've read), so £75K and a £50M clause, or £100K with a £75M clause, meaning if we're to get less for him, he gets less in wages, or if we're to get more for him, he gets more in wages.
He shares in our increased fee, likewise, he receives less if we're to have to receive less.

Yes, you read that right, 2018.

We've agreed a deal for £48M to sign Keita. He's had his medical, and we'll get him in July next year.

It's a shame we've not managed it for this Summer, but that's some real uncharacteristic smart thinking from the club.

Now we're actually in it. I wasn't going to tempt fate beforehand.

The draw is at 5pm in Monaco, tomorrow.

Pot 1: Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Juventus, Benfica, Monaco, Spartak Moscow, Shakhtar Donetsk

Pot 2: Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, Man City, Porto, Man United

Pot 3: Napoli, Tottenham, Basel, Olympiakos, Anderlecht, Liverpool, Roma, Besiktas

Pot 4: Celtic, CSKA Moscow, APOEL, Feyenoord, Sporting CP, Maribor, Qarabag, RB Leipzig

We'll get one team from pots 1, 2 & 4 - we can't be drawn against other English teams.

How about this for the 'revenge' group:

Juventus - trying it on when attempting to sign Can
Barcelona - Coutinho etc, etc
RB Leipzig - for not selling us Keita

An all German group:

Bayern
Dortmund
RB Leipzig

It would be rather ironic if we drew Dortmund and Celtic.

A not overly hard group, but with enough to keep us fully focused, and with ease of travel thrown in too, would be:

Benfica
Porto
Feyenoord

Ones to avoid because of travel and/or potential adverse weather are: Shakhtar Donetsk and Spartak Moscow from pot 1 and CSKA Moscow and FK Qarabag (Azerbaijan) from pot 4.

Looks like we'll start the season with a new physio:

Liverpool to appoint new physio Christopher Rohrbeck from Mainz

http://www.espnfc.co.uk/english-premier-league/story/3133108/liverpool-to-appoint-new-physio-christopher-rohrbeck-from-mainz

It doesn't say whether he'll be our head physio, like he was at Mainz, but if he can help keep more of our players fitter than this season, then he'll be a welcome addition, whatever his job tital.

Liverpool open talks to sign £20m Mario Gotze from Borussia Dortmund this summer

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/liverpool-open-talks-sign-20m-9843932

Why? He failed at Bayern, he's failing back at Dortmund. Why do we want to take the risk that his career is on a permanent downward trajectory?

We need players who are ready to take the next step into the big time, not those going in the opposite direction.

Liverpool scouts to watch Mahmoud Dahoud as Jurgen Klopp keeps tabs on chief target

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/liverpool-scouts-watch-mahmoud-dahoud-8777631

He's reported to have a clause that comes into effect in 2017 for an £8.5M (or very close to that figure) buyout figure.

Whether it's true, who knows, or whether it's only Summer 2017, but I can see Klopp trying to get him again in January if at all possible.
I think his plan is to pair Dahoud with Can. Neither are dedicated defensive midfielders, but can defend, so I think his idea is to have two 'who can', rather than one that 'only' defends, and one would sit and the other join the attack if applicable.

I still think Can could be moulded to be a Hamann type player, if he can just get his head around the more disciplined approach and understand that a 'Hamann type' player is equally as important as a 'Gerrard type' player, both within the midfield make-up and the team.

We kick off away at Arsenal on August 13th.

As well as that, we've got both Spurs and Chelsea away as games 3 and 5.

If we can come straight 'out of the blocks', we may catch those three cold and take advantage. Plus, we'd have three of our hardest away games out of the way earlier on, with more time to retrieve the situation if things don't end up in our favour.

Out of the blue isn't it? Both above papers belong to the same publishing group, so it's Dead Sea quanties of salt with this one methinks.

I wonder if Michael Knighton is living out Middle East way?

Javier Mascherano believes Liverpool owners 'will never understand the club'

http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/premier-league/javier-mascherano-believes-liverpool-owners-will-never-understand-the-club-34469377.html

An interesting viewpoint from someone who can hardly be described as a biased local. It's good to see someone like Masch publicly saying the sort of things we've mentioned so many times on here, and that despite how he left (or felt he had to leave), he still has an obvious affinity with the club, and more importantly, the fans .

I decided to give it it's own thread as it's both deserving in it's own right and also so we don't clog the season's thread up, as this is something that's going to be an issue going forward I think.

Allegedly Sturridge wants to leave in the Summer because of Klopp's supposed criticism.

I don't think Klopp's been critical but if Sturridge takes it that way then he's very thin skinned.

It's probably best if he does leave as no matter how good he may be when fit, surely it's better to have a player who may only have a 1 in 3 record, fit all the time, rather than a player with a 1 in 1.5 record who's only fit 20% of the time.
